It’s that time of year.. windows are open, bees are buzzing and everyone is spending more and more time outdoors. It was a very long winter here in the north.. I say that like it’s the north pole, but really.. this winter kind of felt like it, so I’m going with it. haha! It took forever for spring to come, and when it did… it really just showed up. Love it.
When I moved into this 80 some year old character home last fall.. the yard really wasn’t on my radar. I didn’t think too much about it. There were so many other things to do.. and it was fall, it would be covered in snow soon, right? Now that it is spring, and I want us to be outside as much as possible.. I can’t get it off my mind! One thing I loved about this house when I bought it is that it has a huuuuuuge deck right off the kitchen patio door. I pictured morning coffees.. breakfasts, dinners and relaxing with a drink in the evening.
The yard is a complete blank slate.. which is kind of weird for such an old home, it had potential to have some pretty big trees.. but nope, not a single one. It is just a lawn, that is currently being taken over by dandelions. There is a small fire pit space that I would like to make bigger, a shed.. and a spot to build a driveway off the back alley…. and still room to hopefully build a studio shed! Yes, it is a pretty big blank boring lawn.
It has so much potential. To be honest, it is kind of overwhelming because I don’t know where to begin. I weeded the small existing garden.. which I love, so it will stay as is! Thank goodness, one less thing to do, right? I would love to build a natural rock path to the fire pit.. and maybe on to the shed eventually as well. I would love to dig some flower beds along the fence, and add shrubs and flowers.. and oh my gosh at least one tree back there somewhere would be nice! ha!
Maybe a forest?
I made this inspiration board last night.. and even though I know that much of this is unachievable… cause you know.. I can’t really plant a forest. lol But, I love this relaxed cottage garden vibe.. with a modern twist. What do you think? Gimme all the colour! That is my new motto in life I think. I was so neutral for so long.. I might be rebelling.
It doesn’t have to be perfect. I am loving the picture in the bottom row with the chickens.. the no rules kind of look ha! I’ve been collecting old windows and hope to eventually make a greenhouse out of them.. which will double for photo shoots by the way! That is another dream, to create a yard that will be able to accommodate the occasional photo shoot. Maybe that is why I am drawn to the wild and free approach to this yard daydream.
So for real you guys, where do I start? I have a large rectangle fenced with grass hahahaha! ..and it looks like none of these inspiration pics! lol I feel like this is the biggest project I have ever taken on, and I want to do it on the cheap.. salvaged repurposed materials where I can.
Basically, I just want to sip my morning coffee on the deck and not hate my yard. Thats doable, right? Hell yesssssssss! ..one thing at a time!
